Meeting the 3 mill requirement for State Shared Revenue programs

February 28, 2018
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

Please accept this letter in response to a recent letter authored by Leo Amos. Mr. Amos's letter expressed concerns about the ability of the proposed incorporation of Matlacha and Pine Island to qualify to participate in the state of Florida's State Shared Revenue program.

I am not sure what question Mr. Amos asked of the representative's staff and, of course, I do not know how they replied, but what I do know is the millage charged by an independent fire district for local government services has been used by other cities to help them meet the 3 mill requirement to participate in the program.

In Lee County there are three municipalities (Town of Fort Myers Beach, City of Bonita, and Village of Estero) who all initially used their independent fire district millage to meet the 3 mill requirement for the State Shared Revenue program and they are all doing so today.

I am sorry Mr. Amos did not talk to me about his findings prior to writing his letter as this could have been cleared up quickly.
