Each spring, the Matlacha Hookers award college scholarships to deserving students who meet the qualifications and complete an application. The Hooked on Education Scholarship in 2017 provided recipients with a $2,000 scholarship for post-secondary study. Dakota Goetz and Emma Cicoria are two scholarship recipients from 2017 and the Hookers caught up with them over the holidays to see how they are doing.

Goetz is currently in his sophomore year studying Information Systems at the University of South Florida in Tampa. His current course of study includes his statistics class, which he indicated is his favorite class. In addition, he is a member of the Upward Bound program on campus and he tutors other classmates in math and computer skills. He will pursue an internship in the computer sciences field this summer to further develop his skills in the field. He reported he lives off campus and is enjoying his college experience very much.

When asked about his thoughts on receiving this scholarship, he said, "I really appreciate this scholarship so much - I know I am able to take care of the daily expenses of living off campus and it helps me so much."

Cicoria is currently a freshman studying Early Childhood Education at Florida SouthWestern College. She has enjoyed her studies so far, and identified her Introduction to Childhood Development class as her favorite class. She sad it provided her an internship at the campus daycare center where she was able to work closely with young children and learn about early childhood development.

The scholarship is important to her as she has been able to live on campus her first year and it has offset some of these expenses. She commutes back to Pine Island each week where she works at Winn-Dixie. She has enjoyed the independence of living in the dormitory but also recognizes the value of her job to help offset the expenses of her college education. She said she would love to become a kindergarten teacher once she completes her degree.

The Matlacha Hookers are proud of these students and every student who has received a Hooked on Education Scholarship over the years. The 2018 Hooked on Education Scholarship Application will be available in early February and is open to candidates who live on Pine Island, went to Pine Island Elementary, or have a relative who is a Matlacha Hooker.
