Matlacha Mariners decides to disband

After 17 years the Matlacha Mariners decided to call it quits by presenting a check for $30,000 to the Matlacha Hookers.

The male version of the Matlacha Hookers was composed mostly of husbands of Hookers. In their 17-year run, the Matlacha Mariners had been producing three annual events: the "Southwest Florida Seafood Festival and Car Show," the "Southwest Florida Blues Festival" and the "Mullet Tossing Championship".

"Over the years we've raised and presented a lot of money for the Hookers scholarship program," Mariners secretary Wayne Reed said. "There was a meeting in December where we decided to dissolve the Mariners because of lack of interest and membership over the last two years.

"The Mariners have mainly been focused on benefitting the area's youth, seniors and others in need," Reed said. "Sadly there aren't enough of the younger men that are willing to participate. We're down to just a few members and that's not enough to put on these fundraisers."
