Our democracy is in crisis

February 7, 2018

To the editor:

Our system of checks and balances is out of balance. Democracy is in crisis.

Note these recent events: Congress voted 517 to 5 to impose new sanctions against Russia, and Trump refuses to implement them. Our CIA says with certainty that Russia will interfere in our future elections.

A House Republican Committee writes a "highly classified" memo, privately doctors it, then offers it to the President to authorize release over the grave concerns and objections of the FBI, Department of Justice and the Democrats. The DOJ calls its release "extraordinarily reckless," and the FBI labels it "deliberately misleading." Nevertheless, the Trump supports its release. The FBI, DOJ, even its highly classified status ... nothing is a "check" on the impulses of this man.

The long-awaited Trump infrastructure plan turns out to be a partnership with "private sector investment" to sell off what does not belong to him - our nation's highways, bridges, railroads and the rest of our infrastructure. Corporate America will not be donating, they will be investing, expecting perpetual return on their dollar. Americans will pay to drive home from work. With Congress in his pocket, he has his way even with what is not his.

Despite having control of Congress and the White House, Republicans do not control the popular vote. They win through gerrymandering, voter suppression, the Electoral College system and other means, but not by the hearts of the American people.

The name for minority rule isn't Democracy. It's Oligarchy.
