3rd Annual Snowbird Marathon called most successful yet

January 31, 2018

Last Tuesday's 3rd Annual Snowbird Marathon drew over 500 participants in spite of rain early in the afternoon. There were smiles and laughter as many arrived in hilarious costumes to enjoy live music, food and drinks, free give-aways and the mock obstacle course in the parking lot of Monroe Canal Marina in Saint James City.

The event began at Low Key Tiki with goody bag pick-up at 2:30 p.m. The bags included a T-shirt along with a genuine race bib and various items donated by local merchants. The band Last Resort performed at Low Key Tiki throughout the afternoon. Multiple valuable door prizes were given away and there was a costume contest with awards as well.

"We ran out of measuring sticks," said Leigh Lingwall, one of the organizers, "so we can't guarantee that it's precisely a zero K, but I'm pretty sure nobody really cares."

After the singing of the National Anthem by Amy Fredricks of ST. James City, the boat horn sounded the start and participants maneuvered through obstacles which included an agility cone, a 7-foot-high limbo pole, and a zip line which featured actual zip ties. Some people liked it so much they did it twice! Since there is no prize for being fast, people could take their time on the course and in the marina store and at Woody's Waterside to enjoy shopping, food and drinks before returning to Low Key Tiki for door prizes.

Proceeds from the event go to the Greater Pine island Elks to help children on Pine Island through scholarships, summer camp, field trips and other activities supported by the Elks. Organizers wish to thank all sponsors and participants for their enthusiastic support and hope to see everyone back again next year.
