Island Way Cafe, located inside Jared's Paradise Produce, is having its grand opening Saturday, Jan. 6.

The "specialty" of Island Way Cafe is smoothies - a thick beverage made from blended raw fruit or vegetables that may contain other ingredients such as water, ice or sweeteners such as honey, sugar or syrups.

"We've been open with a soft opening for a couple of months and now we're ready to let everyone know we're here," owner Neil Dundas said. "Our grand opening is Saturday, Jan 6."

Dundas is originally from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and Rochester, New York.

"My father worked at Xerox and we moved around a lot," he said. "I've lived in 14 states and moved to Pine Island because I want my son to grow up here and become a part of the community."

Dundas graduated from Johnson & Wales College of Culinary Arts in Charleston, N.C., and finished up his culinary training in Zurich, Switzerland.

"I came across smoothies while I was working at the Bonita Bay Club," Dundas said "They opened a wellness center and approached me about opening a 'healthy' cafe. When I presented the idea of smoothies to them they loved it.

"I wanted to bring something new and different to the island," he continued. "Smoothies, when they're made right, are a much healthier food choice. We don't use sugars at Island Way Cafe and as a sweetener I use local raw honey which even helps with allergies. Even our food containers are biodegradable and made with pressed palm leaves instead of plastic.

"I'm putting out a healthy message in the neighborhood I want my boy to grow up in. The whole idea of Island Way Cafe is to show where all my ingredients come from. I buy all my produce at Jared's Paradise Produce and the items on my ingredient list replace unhealthy choices."

"Island Way Cafe is a great addition to the island," co-owner of Jared's Paradise Produce Allan Kuehnemund said. "Island Way Cafe will be specializing in 'Good food for a good life'."

After finishing her lunch, customer Mary Lowry said, "It's not only healthy, it's delicious with a delicate balance of flavors, textures and colors I'll be coming back."

Jared's Paradise Produce & Island Way Cafe are located at 10731 Stringfellow Road (next to Creative Coast Preschool)

Hours are Monday Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
