Reflecting on 2017

December 27, 2017

To the editor:

As we approach the end of the year, it is a time to reflect on 2017.

2017 was the year America lost its democracy. The president and Republican majority in Congress have worked in startling opposition to the will of the American people.

Note the repeal of net neutrality, a move opposed by 83 percent of Americans. The Obamacare repeal was opposed by 64 percent and, when Republicans were barely thwarted in their efforts, they found ways to sabotage it instead. Building "The Wall" is opposed by 64 percent. Banning transgenders from service in the military is opposed by 68 percent. Over 80 percent want legislation restricting assault weapons.

The majority also opposes the withdrawal from the Paris Climate accord, recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, pardoning Sheriff Arpaio, repealing DACA ("Dreamers"), shrinking of our national monuments, defunding Planned Parenthood and the blatant insults and personal attacks against any opposing opinion.

And now the Trump tax bill is opposed by 75 percent and Congressional Republicans are heralding it as a "major accomplishment".

If the American people are against it, it seems the GOP is for it.

What do we call this new form of American rule? Tyranny of the minority? Kleptocracy?

Or simply the truth - the Collapse of American Democracy at the hands of the Republican Party.
