Long-time Pine Island resident Clara McKnight celebrates 97th

December 6, 2017
By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

Clara McKnight was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 6, 1920, and has been a Matlacha resident for over 35 years. Clara and about 30 of her friends gathered at the St. James City Civic Association Wednesday for the weekly Bridge Tournament. Clara's husband was well known artist Jesse McKnight.

"The only reason anyone knows who I am is because of my husband, Jesse McKnight," Clara said. "Jesse and I were married for 59 years. He started painting years ago but got more involved after he retired and we began spending time in Matlacha in 1986. We helped get the Matlacha Art Building opened for the Pine Island Art Association."

In March 2016, the Pine Island Art Association honored Jesse McKnight with an exhibition of his award-winning nationally-renowned paintings of Southwest Florida and of places he and Clara traveled throughout the world. Many of his full-size and miniature paintings were on loan from Clara and friends.

"It was a wonderful art show of my husbands paintings," McKnight said. "This is a very nice gesture from my friends."
