Matlacha Civic set to discuss incorporation

November 15, 2017
By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

The Matlacha Civic Association will hold its first meeting of the season today at 6 p.m.

The topics under discussion are the status of the annexation lawsuit with updates from Michael Hannon and guest speaker Noel Andress, who will explain the proposed charter for the incorporation.

Whether Pine Island should or should not incorporate has been a question on islanders' minds since six lots in Matlacha were annexed by Cape Coral in December 2016.

Since then the Matlacha Civic Association and Matlacha resident Mike Hannon have launched a lawsuit against Cape Coral to reverse the annexation.

Hannon wrote in a Letter to the Editor that he considers "this ordinance as a grave assault on the sovereignty of Lee County and the rights of its residents to enjoy our delicate and non-urban environment."

Andress will make a presentation in support of incorporation.

"It's been my experience over the last 20 years or so that the Pine Island Plan has changed several times," Andress said. "And the changes have not been beneficial to what the people of Pine Island want the island to be.

"I am for incorporation for three reasons: One, we need to get control of our land use," he continued. "Two, we need to stop any further annexations. Three, we are a donor community that would benefit by incorporating."

The Matlacha Civic Association is located at the Matlacha Community Center, at 4577 Pine Island Road. Contact the center at 239-283-4110.
