A true Hurricane Irma story

October 4, 2017

To the editor:

This is a true Hurricane Irma story. My wife Marianne and I were looking for a safe place to ride out the storm. This was about 3:45 a.m. the day Irma hit the Florida area.

We checked about four shelters and found they were either full or closed. We were just riding around the Cape Coral area looking for a safe place - but did not find anywhere for us to stay. On Pine Island Road we found a station open for gas so we pulled in and filled up the car. At the station there was a man filling gas cans. He spoke to Marianne and asked if we had a place to stay. We told him we were looking, but could not find anyplace. We never saw this man before. He said he and his wife had a large home with a spare bedroom and we were welcome to stay with them - we readily accepted. We followed him home and met his family wife Sue, son Chris, two dogs, two cats and one lizard. Chris is a self taught piano player of classic music who entertained us for days.

There are still good people in this world so keep the faith.
