Rooney needs to find time for Pine Island constituents

August 23, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

Our democracy in the United States is based on a government of representation in Congress. Our 19th Congressional District Representative is Francis Rooney. Since the beginning of 2017 several civic groups and individuals have frequently requested in writing and via email, phone and text some kind of Townhall meeting with Representative Rooney to express concerns and discuss issues important to Pine Islanders. Since Representative Rooney has never been to Pine Island, and it is a sizable landmass in his district, one would think he would respond to his constituents, agree to meet the people of Pine Island and make a visit. However, Representative Rooney did say he had been by the island in a boat.

Since taking office eight months ago he has made several visits to Naples, had a town hall meeting in Cape Coral, hunted pythons in the Everglades and flown over the Everglades during the several recesses Congress has enjoyed. While there is usually a response from his office that he would like to meet with people of Pine Island, there has been no commitment.

Where is that representation in the 19th District Mr. Rooney? Are Pine Island and its residents of so little consequence to you that only your larger constituencies get your attention? That is not what was intended when our representative democracy was formed. You were sent to Washington, D.C. to represent all of District 19. Perhaps this open letter to District 19 newspapers will catch your attention and you will at last respond to Pine Island with a meeting date
