The Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce named the new Mango Queen at its monthly card exchange meeting Wednesday night at Lazy Flamingo. The Mango Queen for 2017 is Jessica Potts.

"I'm very proud to represent Pine Island as this year's Mango Queen," Potts said. "I've been a Lee County resident my entire life, a 6th generation Florida native and have lived on Pine Island for three years. We have a lot of pride here in our community and our way of life and I'm very excited to represent Pine Island."

Queen Jessica is the marketing director in the family owned business, TowBoatUS - Charlotte Harbor, based in Bokeelia. The company has been in business on the island for over 30 years and is the largest "on the water" towing service in the Charlotte Harbor area. Its home port is in Bokeelia with additional ports in Fisherman's Village and Burnt Store Marina where they provide professional service to local boaters from Englewood to Sanibel.

Jessica and her husband, Kyle, live in Bokeelia with their children, Liran and Kamryn; dogs, Tito and Redfish; and newly acquired kitten, Jack.

The newly crowned Mango Queen follows in Summer Dooley's foot steps.

"This has been a wonderful year," Dooley said. "I got to speak to the County Commissioners representing Pine Island and also had the experience of being on WINK-TV. I found out I'm not made to be a news anchor but it was a lot of fun. I love where I'm from and am very proud to have represented Pine Island for the last year. The only advice I could offer the new queen is go out there and have fun with it."

Chamber Executive Director Jennifer Jennings, who was Mango Queen in 2003, said the choice was difficult but Potts was the perfect choice. As Mango Queen, Potts will be the face of the annual Mango Mania - Tropical Fruit Fair.

Every year the chamber holds an adult T-shirt art design contest and a child's T-shirt design contest. The winner of the adult design is Amber Zoellner, a graphic designer for FishWare, and the winner of the child's contest for 2017 is Clayten McCurdy. Zoellner received a check for $100 and McCurdy a check for $50.

"This is the official kick-off to the 2017 Mango Mania season," Jennings said. "This will be our 21st anniversary of Pine Island's Mango Mania - Tropical Fruit Fair. This is our summer festival and it's all about the mango Pine Island mangoes and other tropical fruits. Mango Mania is a two day event at the German American Club in Cape Coral on Saturday, July 15th, and Sunday the 16th.

"We will have all kinds of mangos and tropical fruit foods and beverages," Jennings said. "Plus a mango tasting table, and lots of arts and crafts vendors. Interested vendors should visit the Great Pine Island Chamber of Commerce website at and fill out an application. The application deadline is June 30, 2017."

Mango Mania is a weekend of family entertainment for kids of all ages. The two-day event is filled with games, contests, carnival rides and educational talks about tropical plants, palms, art and lots more.
