The Matlacha Hookers awarded 11 scholarships during its May 11 meeting at Sandy Hook Restaurant. Each recipient received $2,000 to be used at any post-secondary institution of their choosing.

"Tonight is a very exciting night for the Matlacha Hookers," scholarship committee member Dee Hanks said. "We will present 11 very deserving students with scholarships These scholarships are very important to these students and often make the difference whether they can continue their education or not."

The co-chairperson of the Hooked on Education scholarship program, Peg Cruckshank, opened the meeting by announcing that the Pine Island Elementary Fishing Tournament and Derby raised $22,000 in scholarship funds this year, and has raised $125,000 since the scholarship program began in 2003.

"Seven of the 11 scholarships are given in memory of a person, in gratitude of something or by a particular group," Cruckshank said. "The Logan Rabinette Memorial Scholarship is given by Steve Rabinette in memory of his son. This is the fifth year this scholarship has been awarded by Logan's dad."

Two scholarships from Jeff and Diane Haugland of Island Crab Co. are in appreciation of the island scholarships and support their daughter Tausha received when she was attending college to become a music teacher.

Two scholarships for Pine Island Elementary School graduates are from funds raised from the Pine Island Elementary Fishing Tournament.

"The Matlacha Mariner Scholarship Award is funded by our brother organization the Matlacha Mariners," Cruckshank said. "The Mariners have been giving scholarships for many years, either through their own organization or through the Matlacha Hookers Hooked on Education scholarships. This is the first time the Matlacha Mariners are here to present the award.

"New this year is the Jeremie Riehm Memorial Scholarship given by his wife, Tina Riehm, in his memory," Cruckshank continued. "Jeremie Riehm was lost when the El Faro cargo ship went down in Hurricane Joaquin near the Bahamas."
