By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

Last Tuesday morning, Louis Ramos, grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, presented a check for $2,552 to Steve Hook, principal of Pine Island Elementary School.

"We are members of the Knights of Columbus at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Church on Pine Island," Ramos said. "We are a group of men who do a lot of things for the community. One of the things we take pride in is every year we do a Tootsie Roll drive that raises money for your school. With the help of our Pine Island community we were able to raise $2,552."

Since its founding in 1882, the first principal of the Knights of Columbus has been charity.

"We are men of faith and men of action," Ramos said. "In 2015, the Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record for the 17th consecutive year. Our charitable donations increased from 2014 by more than $1.5 million and we also achieved our highest level of charitable service volunteering more than 73.5 million hours of service."

The Knights of Columbus charitable activities include: partnerships with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity to its own Food for Families and Coats for Kids projects and other local charities and fundraisers like the Tootsie Roll Drive.

"I can't tell you how much we appreciate this," Hook said. "We talk about how charitable the people of Pine Island are all the time. Thank you very much."

The Knights of Columbus meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Church, 12175 Stringfellow Road. For more about the church, call 239-2830456.
