A great act of kindness from Legion Post 136 Riders

April 5, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

On March 18, 2017, the Port Charlotte Patriot Riders group requested Post 136 Riders to ride as escorts from Port Charlotte Funeral Home to Sarasota National Cemetery. Their mission that day was to pick up and provide a military escort for Murray "Slim" Gilchrest, a homeless veteran.

The Legion Riders motto is "Let No One Be Forgotten." Early last Wednesday morning, 18 American Legion Riders from Pine Island Post 136 fought their way through the thick fog and 60 degree weather. They were meeting up with another 25 motorcycle veteran riders in Port Charlotte. As the weather cleared, Slim had a beautiful escorted ride to his final resting place with almost 50 motorcycles watching over him.

For the Pine Island American Legion Riders Chapter 136, this was 150-mile round trip. When asked why do we do this? The answer is very simple, "We ride to honor those who have served.".

Post 136 can not begin to thank our Riders for all the great caring things they do as a group. The American Legion Post 136 family wants to say 'Thank You' and let you know how very proud we are of each one of you.

Tom Lewis

American Legion Post 136 commander
