To the editor:
Thanks to everyone who donated to the Greater Pine Island Lions 7th annual Raffle/Auction which was held on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Again this year we held the Raffle/Auction at the St. James Civic Center. Only a few of our members were on hand to help decorate but the Boy Scout Troop 20 was there to help us set up the tables and chairs. Thank you leaders and scouts for always being there for The Greater Pine Island Club when we need you. Rubye Woodhead brought table decorations and she was helped bring the tables to life with live leaves and flowers from her yard. Thanks for everyone who helped her with that project also.
Ticket sales were way down this year and only 28 people where in attendance to bid on the wonderful donations we received this year. We only reached about half of the $7,000 goal we thought we would reach this year. We know the Island had many things going on day and night and we had lots of competition this year. We certainly appreciated everyone who sold tickets without you we would not have done as well as we did.
We had lots of new and different items on both the Silent and Live Auction from all over the state hoping they might draw more people to our event, but we will just survive and move on. We are already thinking of changing our location for next year, changing the amount we charge for the tickets and if we do that, we will also need to change the amounts of the raffle ticket prizes we give out from the money we take in from the tickets. Unless we can give more donors for the food, we will also have to change the menu.
Since we have many loyal followers who have been coming to the Raffle/Auction since we started 7 years ago, we would love to have your input as to the changes we make. We would appreciate a short note telling us what changes you would like to see changed and why, or would you like it to remain the way it is. One thought changing the evening back to Sunday. We tried it on Sunday during the day one year and that was a complete disaster but it might be worth changing since there are so many activities on the Island in January and February on Saturday. Just address your note to GPI Lions Club, P.O. Box 734, St. James City, FL 33956, or if you want to call, my number is 239-283-9761. If a machine answers, just leave a message and I will call you back.
The auction did not bring in as much money as we expected and needed, but everyone had lots of fun and enjoyed the food. We appreciated those of you who stayed after to help us clean up the facility.
With all of these snags, we still had lots of auction items (thanks to those who donated from all over the state and those locally on our island and in Fort Myers and Cape Coral.)
Thanks also go out for the donations: Mary Grover donated a beautiful Christmas Serving Set (cake plate, four smaller serving dishes, four cups, and a server! A set if four beautiful ceramic canisters! The beautiful bright red glass bowl with lid that was on a clear glass pedestal and had clear glass decoration around the top and on the top! She also donated three pieces of pewter pieces and one silver. We combined them in an open basket with a copy of an article I printed from the computer telling about the pewter, where they were made and approximately when. They brought dollars for the GPI Lions that we would not have for our treasury.
You know they say, "One good turn deserves another?" Terry and Ed Doss gave the GPI Lions a donation when they came in, they are long-time members of the GPI Lions and have had to cut back on what they overdo nowadays but we had invited them just to come down and eat with us. Well, the rest of the story guess who one the 50/50 prize? Congrats to Ed and Terry and thanks for the donation.
Bill Rulien, our new auctioneer this year, and GPI Lions member, won the $1,000 prize! However, after the shock wore off a little, he said he wanted to donate $500 to the GPI Lions Club and $500 back to the pot to be drawn as another prize. Thank you Bill for being a GPI Lion and also for being so generous. he winner of that $500 was Mary Lou Long. Congratulations to Mary Lou, also. She and her husband, Elvis, run the Long's Paint and Body Shop in St. James City and this is the second time they have one two years ago they won the $1,000 prize. They have been selling tickets for us ever since and one of the winners this year was from a ticket they sold to Junior Gatewood, Bokeelia, $500; the $100 prizes were won by John T. Evans and Mary Jean Schimmel both GPI members. John T. Evans donated $50 back to the Lions.

Thanks to the Eagle and especially Ed Franks, editor, for all you do getting the news out for all of the organizations! We certainly appreciate you and could not get such good results without your help. Thanks also for Kevin Russell "Things Happening on Pine Island" Facebook page!
