Donations sought for Hookers’ scholarship program

February 22, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

The Matlacha Hookers Scholarship Committee is seeking other groups to sponsor scholarships or make donations in the name of their organization, business or family. Said scholarships would be under the umbrella process and guidelines of the Matlacha Hookers' "Hooked on Education" Scholarship Program.

We have a highly organized scholarship selection process by which Greater Pine Island students and residents may apply for scholarships for secondary education, including both college and technical programs. Our application has been fine-tuned over the years to include all necessary information needed to make an informed decision in our selection process.

The Scholarship Committee consists of seven Matlacha Hookers, many of whom have educational and school based work experiences. Since the program first started, more than $100,000 has been awarded to worthy applicants.

When an organization, business or a family sponsors a scholarship through the Matlacha Hookers, the scholarship is named for the organization, business or family. A specific area of study may be emphasized or selected by the organization or family should they wish.

The Awards Night for all scholarships is the second Monday night in May at the Matlacha Hookers meeting which takes place at the Sandy Hook Restaurant. Families, business or groups giving scholarships are invited to award the scholarship to their recipients if they so choose.

In 2016, we had several organizations and families sponsor scholarships which allowed our total number of scholarships to be eleven, totaling $16,500.

The following six scholarships were given in the amount of $1,500 by groups or families:

Logan Rabinette Memorial Scholarship

Don Maxwell Scholarship

Bert Tidwell and Harold Webster Scholarship

Matlacha Mariner Scholarship

Realtors of Pine Island Scholarship

Secret Sisterhood Scholarship

Funding for an additional five scholarships was raised by the Matlacha Hookers.

We can provide the means for other organizations, businesses and families to offer scholarships without the laborious process. If you are interested in sponsoring a scholarship under the Matlacha Hookers' "Hooked on Education" Scholarship program, we are available to speak further to your organization and answer questions you may have.

Please do not hesitate to call either co-chair of the Scholarship Committee.

Thank you,

Peg Cruckshank, 239-239-2827

Lois Lemke, 239-699-2686
