Bill to consolidate fire districts tabled

January 25, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

This past Thursday morning, the Lee County Legislative Delegation held its annual public meeting to discuss local bills and to gauge public and legislative support thereof. I am proud to report that the proposed bill to consolidate the independent fire control districts in Lee County has been tabled (rescinded).

There was resounding consensus from the public and the various fire control districts that local control is better than consolidation at the county level. It was also agreed to develop a non-binding "straw-poll" for the November 2018 ballot to measure the public's interest on the topic.

For now (and hopefully for a long time to come), the 19 independent fire control districts of Lee County will remain independent.

Local residents will continue to be able to reach out and touch their locally elected fire commissioners on matters that are important to them. And, the tax dollars that are collected to support fire service will stay local. That's the way it should be.

By the way, the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District has two public meetings a month. One is a workshop and the other is the business meeting. The fire commissioners work for the community and they want community engagement. Feel free to attend any meeting you want this is YOUR district.
