Greater Pine Island Lions' Little Lending Library off to a good start

To the editor:

The Greater Pine Island Lions have recently added to their Little Lending Library in the GPI Lions Park at 5th Avenue and Lemon Street in St. James City. This came about by help from many people:

1) We started with the Little Free Lending Library site online where we first learned about the ones already here on the Island in Bokeelia and St. James City (we now have 4).

2) Then we began our search for a container - they have "kits" for sale - but wood does not withstand the weather too well here on the Island so I started looking at what we did have on the Island that could work. One thing that caught my eye was the "Auto Shopper Tower" in which they place ads for cars, trucks, and boats located in the WD Shopping Plaza. I called them to see if they could help us out. William Heitzenrater of Auto-Shopper, Lakeland, Fla., had one delivered to my home in St. James City free of charge.

3) I put an ad on Facebook for a local artist that might help us "decorate" the tower. Jade Lutenberg and her grandmother, Andrea Thomas, came, picked up the "tower" and returned it a couple of weeks with lions, sea turtles, children, superheros, books, animals, words of wisdom - just what we wanted. Publix donated $100 for paint.

4) Barb Riordan, Friends of the Library, gave me the names of a couple of people who had volunteered to set the "tower." We bought the supplies, called me, met at my home to pick up everything and went to work. It is now set in cement and looks beautiful.

5) It is filled with books for adults, teenagers and children.

6) Now we need your help. Please bring a book to leave, and pick one up to read. Or as many as you want. Just be sure to replace what you take with books so that we can keep the library stocked.

The true object of the project is to encourage people to come to the park, sit awhile and read in the shade of the beautiful trees and cool breeze!

Thanks to Tonya Player, Andrea Thomas and Jade Lutenberg, And several people who were closing down (last day) of their garage sales who donated books.

If you would like to donate books (and the "tower" is full, just call me at 283-9761 to make arrangements. Next summer we hope to be able to provide "crafts for kids," "come read with us" "painting in the park" and many other things for our Pine Island children to do. If you are interested and want to volunteer to get these new projects started, call 283-9761. If we do not get volunteers, the projects will not get done.

Monetary donations may be made to Greater Pine Island Lions, P.O. Box 734, St. James City, FL 33956
