To the editor:

It was a beautiful day last Saturday with a cool morning and blue skies for the 36th Lee County Parks & Pine Island Kiwanis Junior Olympics at the Pine Island Little League Park with 40-plus junior athletes participating. The events of the day were; 50-yard dash, soft ball throw, long jump, Frisbee throw and finally the quarter-mile run.

First, second and third place ribbons per event were donated by Lee County Parks & Recreation and a special recognition to Christy Tvardek and Sue Slingerland for their help and preparation for the event. The overall 2nd & 3rd place prizes were real silver dollars donated by the "Girls of SunTrust Bank." The 1st place overall trophies were donated by Kiwanis of Pine Island. Every contestant received a new official Junior Olympic T-shirt donated by Waggoner & Bruehl, Stearns Construction and Team Shevlin at Century 21.

Thanks again for all the helpers that worked the field events, cooked hot dogs, served drinks and the sponsors that help to make the event a wonderful day for all the kids. See you all next year!
