Make a difference

To the editor:

As a lifelong learner, to be able to participate in a training that can assist our island community was an opportunity that I could not resist, so I signed up for the CERT Basic Training. Each CERT class that I attended covered emergency scenarios that prepared me to take proper action and one of the course topics was treating life-threatening conditions. Besides having a positive experience throughout the course sessions, I felt useful to be able to apply the new skills that I was taught in case of a natural disaster or an emergency in Pine Island. While in the program I met other residents just like me that embarked in the life-saving education classes and engaged in activities that were fun to resolve with team effort. Now I am one of the Pine Island 2016 CERT team proud graduates who is fortunate to volunteer at the Lee County Emergency Management.

Anyone who wants to be part of the CERT team can call Station 1 at (239-283-0030 to sign-up for the next training. As a citizen you can make a difference by joining the CERT team that meets every first Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in Station 1.
