Island Girl Fitness Club relocates

September 2, 2015
By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

In August 2013, Island Girl Fitness Club opened on Pine Island. Almost one year later, on July 1, 2014, Tina Bush purchased the business.

"I just loved the concept of the business," Bush said. "I'm a strong believer in 'circuit training' and Island Girl Fitness was exactly what I was looking for. Since then we've outgrown the space we are in and are relocating to a 2,000-square-foot space in the Island Exchange Center. We will reopen the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, Sept. 8.

"One change is that Island Girl Fitness is now accepting men," Bush said. "The old slogan 'No men No mirrors' no longer applies. Men will have access to all of our group classes from yoga to senior strength and stretching classes, one-on-one individual training for men and will also have access to a special area of equipment.

"The focus of the club is about eating right, and living right," Bush said. "Our main program is still circuit training for women that includes a 30-minute circuit training system that builds strength, balance and cardio through the use of hydraulic equipment that is also easy on our joints.

"Since purchasing the business last year I've learned there is a great need for a designated yoga studio on the island, so the biggest change is the addition of a truly dedicated yoga and meditation studio" Bush said. "In recent years we've had yoga instructors teaching classes all over the island. I wanted Island Girl Fitness to offer yoga from many instructors under one roof, because it is something that I value as part of my fitness regimen."

Bush set up a series of meetings with many of the yoga instructors on the island and invited six top-notch instructors to team with Island Girl Fitness.

"We will have 12 instructors total with five of them teaching yoga," Bush said. "Every instructor is certified in a different area and teaches with a different style. Island Girl is also starting 'Little Yogi' classes. Island Girl Fitness has members from 16 to 87 and I'm very excited to be the first to offer yoga to every age group on the island," Bush said.

She stressed the importance of exercise.

"Exercise will boost your energy, you will lose weight and you'll just feel better," Bush said. "The fact that we will be offering fitness and healthy living for such a wide range of island residents - from pre-school age children to our senior members - is very exciting!

In addition, we offer our members individual training sessions, nutrition counseling, healthy living instruction, massage therapy, as well as numerous group classes and community workshops. Whatever your fitness needs may be, you can now find what you are looking for under one roof! Each month the class schedules will be featured in the Pine Island Eagle!"

The highlight of the new location is Pine Island's first truly dedicated yoga/meditation studio.

"We will make available the teachings of over a dozen different instructors with more than 100 years of experience and more than 15 different certifications," Bush said.

Bush has assembled an impressive number of instructors. Dr. Lee Tapager (DOM, AP) is a doctor of oriental medicine, acupuncture physician, qi gong and yoga instructor. "Lee's teaching style is a true balance of medical knowledge and inner peace," Bush said.

Tanya Crossman (RYT, PTA, LMT) a registered yoga teacher, physical therapy assistant and licensed massage therapist. Crossman presents a Hatha based yoga style linking movement with mindful breathing. She approaches her teaching with an individual emphasis based on each student's needs and abilities.

Jaime Boswell (RYT 200 YA) is a registered yoga teacher. She teaches a variety of classes from mixed level flow to yoga for healthy living and private yoga sessions. She brings a peaceful style that truly presents the spirit of yoga.

Isabel Francis (RN, CMT) is a registered nurse, certified massage therapist and yoga instructor. With her strong medical background, Francis blends "western" medicine with alternative mind and body therapies by offering a blend of classes ranging from yoga-lates to yin yoga to flow classes.

Suzanne Dzija is Yoga Alliance Certified. She brings a lifetime of love for healthy living and mind and body well being.

Lisa Thorpe will be promoting and leading a special weekly class for Little Yogis. As a mother of two small children, Thorpe has developed a love for incorporating her desire for a healthy lifestyle into her children's lives.

"Kim Holowell has been the club manager since Island Girl Fitness was opened," Bush said. "With her personal love for each and every member she is a daily presence at the club. Kim has over 30 years of experience in the fitness industry and as an Independent Young Living Representative, she is available to each and every member of the club.

Beckie Lavigne, club assistant and a true native of Pine Island, brings excellent customer service experience and balance to the team with her organizational skills and focus. She is available to answer any fitness related questions and to help you form a fitness agenda that works for you!

"Because of health issues I've faced over the last couple of years I have been forced to start a new healthy life style," Bush said. "So members of Island Girl Fitness will find me here working out with them every day."

"Over the door I am having a sign installed," Bush said. It says, "'May every person who walks through these doors feel loved and empowered.' I want everyone who comes in here to feel important and welcomed!"

New club hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Special arrangements can be made for any member needing the club outside of those hours. For information, contact Bush at 239.244.4434 or 239-558-4060. The staff can also be reached by email at
