Lifelong island resident Kayla Baker recently graduated from Larson Educational Services (Real Estate School) in Fort Myers, passed her sales associate exam just a week later and has joined BlueWater Realty of Pine Island Inc.

Baker was born and raised on Pine Island and graduated from Ida Baker High School in 2011. Her parents owned and operated several businesses on the island while she was growing up.

Her mother, Amy Gessmann, was a broker for Dolphin Realty, and ran the office for her stepdad, Don Gessmann, owner/operator of Gessmann Construction, which built many homes on the island.

Baker's father, Tiger Baker, was one of the originals of Bakers Heating and Air which was sold; however, Tiger got right back into the island business with AC Medic 911.

Growing up on the island, Baker said she and her family were always on the water, which intrigued her to go try her skills at captain's school. She succeeded and holds her "6 pack" OUPV captain's license.

Admitting she is a jack of all trades, Baker said she enjoys every minute spent on the water and people will sometimes even catch her playing "first mate," baiting hooks and handling tarpon for her boyfriend, Capt. Cory McGuire of Falling Tide Charters.

They purchased their first home in Bokeelia a few years ago, and since then she's been hooked by the real estate business.

"I'm really excited to begin this new career," Baker said. "This is a business I grew up with."
