At the monthly meeting of the Matlacha Mariners, President Garth Moreau and board member Roy Cruckshank presented checks to three island charities: Beacon of H.O.P.E., F.I.S.H. (Friendly Islanders Sending Help) and the Pine Island Food Pantry.

"We are happy to present these three island charities with a check for $2,500 each," Cruckshank said. "We hold a number of events, the most recent the 24th Annual Mullet Toss Championship held last March 21st. The turnout was great and with the help of the Matlacha Hookers we were able to raise this money."

The Matlacha Mariners is a community oriented 501c3 non-profit corporation incorporated Feb. 15, 2002. The group of men organized to help with some of the local needs of the community that are not being met otherwise. The main focus has been to help the elementary school students and specifically Pine Island Elementary music education students. The Mariners have also made donations to the Little League, Matlacha Community Center and now the Beacon of H.O.P.E., F.I.S.H. and the Pine Island Food Pantry.

"We have a check for $2,500 to present to Betsy Haesemeyer from the Beacon of H.O.P.E.," Cruckshank said. "We generally don't suggest where the money should be used but in this case we want these funds to go into the 'Matching Funds' account."

An anonymous Beacon of H.O.P.E supporter has agreed to provide the organization with up to $30,000 in matching funds for the Beacon's Community Learning Center. For every dollar raised (up to $30,000) the donor will contribute a matching amount.

The second check for $2,500 presented was to Diane Higgins from F.I.S.H.

"I want to thank you for your support," Higgins said. "Pine Island FISH offers volunteer assistance like transportation to doctor, grocery. We lend mobility equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, shower stools. We provide emergency assistance for rent, utilities, and medical. Our monthly meetings are held at the Methodist Church on the first Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. New members are always welcome. Thank you very much."

The third check for $2,500 was for the Food Pantry, which serves residents of Pine Island and greater Matlacha and is open Mondays and Thursdays from 8:3010:30 a.m. The Food Pantry is located in the Life Center of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church on Stringfellow Road in Bokeelia. Donations can be mailed to 12175 Stringfellow Road, Bokeelia, FL 33922, or call 239-443-6561.

To date the Matlacha Mariners have donated more than $100,000 to island organizations.

The Matlacha Mariners are always looking for new members. The group is open to men who are at least 21 years of age. Membership dues are $20 for a lifetime membership.

Mariners' meetings are held the first Thursday of every month at the Elks Club behind Tru-Value hardware on the corner of Stringfellow and Pine Island Road.
