By ED FRANKS (efranks@breezenewspapers.com) , Pine Island Eagle

Beginning May 5, the Beacon of H.O.P.E. will offer hearing services from Hearing Health of SW Florida.

Hearing Health is family owned and operated by Charles Cameron. He is a board certified hearing/listening specialist and delivered two "hearing health" presentations to the O.W.L.S. at Pine Island United Methodist Church several months ago.

"My wife and I started Hearing Health in Southwest Florida about three years ago and I've been in the hearing business for almost 20 years in upstate New York," Cameron said. "I started right out of high school, worked through college, and worked for the family business until we started the business here in southwest Florida.

"Hearing loss can be caused by any number of things," Cameron said. "Some people are born with it. Genetics can cause hearing loss. If mom, dad, grandparents had hearing loss, there's a good chance you will also."

"One of the things we look at when a patient comes in is what their environment is," Cameron said. "What people often say is, 'I can hear everything but I don't understand anything. You tend to say people are mumbling. Low frequencies are male voices and sounds in general."

He continued, "Understanding the environment where the patient is most affected is important to determining exactly what they need. We do an evaluation, take into consideration your environment, the budget and offer all of the available options. We try to educate our patients so they can make the correct decision the first time."

As a United Way partner, the Beacon of H.O.P.E. welcomes Hearing Health of SW Florida. Hearing Health will be at the Beacon from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month. The services will include free hearing tests.

Specialists stress that hearing loss can severely impair your quality of life. If you believe that you or a family member is affected by hearing loss, the best place to start is with a hearing evaluation by a licensed hearing instrument specialist.

Hearing Health of SW Florida will also offer the cleaning of hearing aides, maintenance of all makes of hearing aides and answering questions about hearing changes.

If you wish to use the services of Hearing Health of SW Florida, please call 471-7148 to schedule an appointment.
