Vino’s Picasso back at Lovegrove Gardens

April 8, 2015
By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

There was a sold-out crowd at Leoma Lovegrove Gardens Wednesday morning when Vino's Picasso presented a "surprise instructor." The instructor was described as uber-talented, Florida-famous, funky, cool, vibrant and sassy.

Vino's Picasso is not an art school - it is self described as "Painting, wine and a damn good time!" We are not about fine art, but FUN art," owner Mercedes Price Harry said.

"What is Vino Picasso?" Price Harry asked. "Vino's Picasso is a number of things! First and foremost we are a paint studio where you can create your own work of art or join us for a session led by a local artist! We are not an art school.

"I started this business exactly four years ago today (April 1)," Price Harry said. "I showed up at zoning and they didn't know what category this new business fell under. It took about 6-8 weeks to get approved and that October I opened the doors to my first location in Fort Myers. We also have a store in Naples as well as this 'seasonal' studio here at Leoma Lovegrove's. In addition we also have traveling studios that can come to your home, business, farmer's market, arts festival or restaurant.

"Today we are painting one of Leoma Lovegrove's paintings," Price Harry said. "But before we begin, as you know we have a 'surprise instructor' - that surprise instructor is me! April Fool's today's 'surprise instructor' is none other than Leoma Lovegrove."

Lovegrove drove in on her custom scooter greeting the crowd. She began to paint offering instruction as she went along. In a surprisingly short time the entire class had replicated Lovegrove's "Leomatized" fish painting.

"I decided on the name 'Vino's Picasso' because the name says the wine owns the art. When we paint we always throw in a little wine and when we're feeling good we let you kind of branch out. The wine will help you create good art because it calms you.

"Vino's Picasso has been coming to Leoma Lovegrove's Garden for three years," Price Harry said. "But this is the first year we've had a complete studio to work in. We supply the paint (acrylic), palette, brushes, canvas, apron and even corkscrews for you to open your bottles. We set it all up and clean it all up too! You only need to worry about bringing your own wine/beer (or buying something unique from us) and leaving with your new masterpiece!"

The studio at Lovegrove's is seasonal and operated only during the southwest Florida "season."

"We have just another week here at Lovegroves," Price Harry said, "but we will be back at the start of next season."
