By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

The St. James City Civic Association will hold its 7th annual art and photograph show Feb. 27 and 28. The Art Expo will feature about 30 Greater Pine Island artists and approximately 30 photographers.

"The opening reception is Friday evening at the St. James City Civic Association building from 7 to 8:30 p.m.," Mary Ann Harms said. "At that time entries will be judged and ribbons will be awarded. The art is a juried competition and the photos will be judged. I hope people come out to meet the artists and photographers."

The exhibition and sale is on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Expo artists and photographers (Hot-shots) will be in attendance to answer questions about their art and photographs.

Then on Sunday there is an addition to the expo called Expo's Attic. The Hotshots decided to keep their show running through Sunday since the building would be open.

This is the seventh year for the art show and the fifth for the photo show and both artists and photographers are encouraged to enter. For those who desire to enter the contest there is an application online at Click on Seventh Annual Art Expo. Entries should fall into the following categories: ceramic, jewelry, sculpture, metal, wood, fiber, drawing/prints, glass, painting, mixed media, outside/garden art and photography.

"This is the fifth year for the photo expo," Harms said. "It has grown from a mere dozen pictures in the first show to 180 photographs last year."

There are seven categories of photographs in the show: nature/wildlife, urban-scape/street, landscape/seascape, people/portraits, creative/abstract/macro, monochrome, traditional.

These categories represent an attempt to be as all encompassing as possible for photographic subjects. At the same time, the pictures are bound to be appealing to the general public with their beauty, sometimes exotic subject matter, emotional impact and compelling composition.

Only original works may be submitted. The subject must be a concept developed by the artist and executed by the artist's own hand. Artists must be present and exhibit only their own original work.

For those interested in submitting art to hang in the show, please contact Mary Ann Harms at 239-283-9337.

For those interested in submitting photographs to hang in the show, please contact Randy at 239-313-3651 or The show is open to all photographers throughout Southwest Florida, and the work must be original. New photographers are warmly welcomed. Receiving will be at SJCCA Friday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. until noon.

Photographers from Pine Island meet every second and fourth Monday evenings at 7 at SJCCA in a group called the Hotshots. Classes, demos, critiquing works and field trips are just some of the many activities of the Hotshots. The group is open to anyone interested in photography.
