Injured manatee, her unborn calf, die after FWC attempt to save them

To the editor

On March 10 we encountered a badly injured manatee in the St James Creek off 8th Avenue in St. James City. She had been run over and had deep cuts. When she submerged air leaked from her wounds. We and several neighbors stayed with her for hours until the FWC manatee rescue boat arrived. They did an awesome job of capturing this badly injured female.

Sadly we found out today that she and her unborn calf died a week later from very severe and infected deep wounds. We see boaters speed through the no-wake idle speed zone daily. Be warned - we are reporting you. Slow down.
