Owners must control their dogs

March 12, 2014

To the editor:

Recent events in and near Bayview Acres subdivision (St. James City) involving unleashed, uncontrolled, aggressive dogs have caused many in the neighborhood to be seriously concerned. On Saturday, March 1, a German shepherd attacked and killed a small dog while it was being walked by its owner. Though a report was made to animal control, apparently ordinances do not allow the dog to be removed from the owner and be declared as a dangerous dog unless more than one report of dangerous/aggressive behavior has been made.

Within the week, others in the neighborhood reported that another German shepherd was not able to be controlled by its owner and acted aggressively toward another animal.

Owners are expected to take reasonable, lawful actions to assure that their dogs are in control at all times When those owners fail to do so, it puts both people and pets at risk. If you have been confronted by a dog which is off leash, running at large, acted aggressive or has actively attacked, please be sure to contact animal control so that records can be kept.
