One person is critically injured and a second dead in a what police believe is an attempted murder-suicide in Southeast Cape Coral Saturday night.

Officials say Cape Coral Police Officers responded to an 8:30 p.m. call of a shooting at a residence in the 600 block of S.E. 7th Ave. Arriving officers found one person with a "life-threatening injury" from at least one gunshot wound.

The suspect in the shooting, meanwhile, had barricaded his or herself inside of the residence.

The injured person was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital on a trauma alert. Cape Coral Police Patrol Units established a perimeter around the residence and attempted to make contact with the suspect inside.

Once attempts to contact the subject inside failed, Cape Coral Police SWAT and crisis negotiators were called.

At around 11:20 p.m., Cape Coral Police Department SWAT team entered the residence. Once inside, officers were able to confirm that the suspect was deceased as a result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No additional information, including the identity of the victim or the suspect, is being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin, officials said Sunday.
