Ten-year-old Jaylin Cammilleri has been selected to be a member of the 2014 "Team USA" cheerleading unit. She will represent the United States at the United World Games in Klagenfurt, at Lake Worthersee, Austria, this summer.
"I tried out for a cheerleading team," Jaylin said. "You had to be 12 years old or older but I was allowed to try out showing all your skills: tumbling, stunting, team stunting. Team members were selected after submitting videos of their skills."
Members of Team USA have been selected from cheerleaders all over the United States and military bases worldwide. The team will consist of 20-25 members and will meet in Venice, Italy, about a week before the games to work on their routines as a team for the first time. They will then fly to Austria.
"I am very excited to have been selected to represent my country as a youth sports ambassador," Jayliin said. "The games will have about 6,000 people from 30 different countries perform in athletic events in field hockey, basketball, tennis, handball, volleyball, rugby and soccer."
At the opening ceremonies. all nations are presented with their national anthems and cheerleading team. Team USA will perform at the opening ceremony and additional ceremonies during the games.
For the cheerleaders, this will be a 10-day adventure and Jaylin needs to raise $3,500 to cover the costs of uniforms, air fare and room and board.
