To the editors:
Recently my wife and I discovered a bullet hole in one of our downstairs bedroom windows. We live on the north end of the island where there are several people who enjoy shooting their firearms from time to time. The Sheriff's Department investigated and decided the bullet had probably come down at a downward angle after having been fired in a manner which did not put the round into a safe backstop such as a dirt berm.
Although I am a gun owner and hunter, I question the wisdom of firing rifles and pistols (with ranges over a mile) in an area with so many houses, children and domestic animals. All I ask is for those of you who enjoy doing so, please make absolutely certain you know the final destination of the bullet you fired.
My wife and I were lucky this time. Please make sure your sport shooting does not result in a tragedy.
