The Pine Island Moose Lodge 1954 has been holding its Annual Bicycle Poker Run for over 10 years. This year's event will be held Saturday, Jan. 25.
"The event helps our island economy," said Tom Akers, the governor of Pine Island Moose #1954. "Plus it provides over 200 participants with an enjoyable day, and most of all provides the necessary funding for our Youth Scholarship Program."
The proceeds of the event provide $1,000 scholarships for Pine Island seniors. Last year the Pine Island Moose presented five scholarships and to date have provided over $50,000 in scholarships to help defray the incidental costs of attending college or vocational training for seniors.
All scholarships are based on need, the students volunteer resume and academic achievements.
"This year's event is in memory of Richard Burton, a long-time crusader for our scholarship program who passed away this year," Akers said.
The Poker Run begins at a local restaurant at the south end of the island with stops to record players' cards at several restaurants, the American Legion and VFW Post. The event ends at the Pine Island Moose Lodge.
High card winners will receive monetary prizes. During the afternoon there will be prizes of T-shirts, hats, gift certificates, gift cards etc.
