Robert Lavern Cheaney, 94, of Fort Myers, formerly of Bokeelia, passed away Dec. 27, 2013. He was born November 27, 1919, in Snyder, Okla., to Robert Lee and Gladys Nailon Cheaney.
Mr. Cheaney was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He received a masters degree from Oklahoma State University and a doctorate degree from Texas A&M University in agronomy. His life-long career took him all over the world to rice growing countries, with his main passion to increase the food production in under-developed countries. He lived and worked in Cuba, Panama, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Venezuela, Brazil and Haiti. He moved to the area in 1986.
Mr. Cheaney was a member of Pine Island United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 68 years, Marjorie Cheaney; daughters, Donna (Carroll) Varner and Cheryl (John) Mickey; three grandchildren, Claire Brucker, Carroll Varner and Sarah Koelsch; five great-grandchildren, Carson Brucker, Henry Brucker, Alice Brucker, Anna Koelsch and Marjorie Kuelsch; and brother, Joe Lilly.
A funeral was held Friday, Jan. 3 at Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 1630 Pine Island Road, Cape Coral.
Entombment with U.S. Air Force Military Honors will follow at Coral Ridge Cemetery.
