Last Saturday, the Pine Island American Legion Post 136 held its 30th anniversary party with more than 150 people attending the event.
"The official date of the anniversary is Oct. 16, but naturally we held the party on a Saturday," Commander Joey Donkersloot said. "I'm very happy with the turnout."
The American Legion was chartered immediately after World War I as "a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation's largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans."

Next weekend the American Legion will hold its annual Halloween Costume Party Sunday, Oct. 27. The post is also a drop-off location for the Pine Island Food Pantry and Post 136 sponsors the annual Girls State Leadership program.
