Commander Keith Keefer of Pine Island VFW Post 4353 presented local artist Joyce Lake with a certificate of appreciation for her mural in the new hall.
"I want to thank you for what you've done," Keefer said. "The tropical painting scene is a perfect addition to our new hall. I would like to present you with this certificate of appreciation for a job well done."
Lake was born in South Dakota, and lived in California and Michigan. She settled in Pine Island about six or seven years ago, married and joined the Matlacha Artists Association.

She has been creating artworks for some time. She's created wire art jewelry, designed T-shirts and even sold a few paintings.
"I was asked by Linda Keefer, the commander's wife, to paint the mural," Lake said. "I generally paint Florida scenes, and I usually paint from photographs I've taken, but this I created from scratch. The VFW supplied the paint and I think it took just three or four days to finish it up."
The scene is of a beach with palm trees and the ocean in the background.
"We're planning to have 'Tropical Nights' here at the VFW," Lake said. "I think it would be fun to have people dress up in beachwear and maybe sit or stand 'on the beach' in front of the mural and have their picture taken."
