To the editor:
Recently the Matlacha Mariners hosted their annual Fishing Tournament and Fish Fry in appreciation for the work the Mariners do raising charitable funds for the Pine Island Community. This year's event turnout topped all previous with the largest number of current and new members along with their guests. The catch was better than ever as well with some good sized Reds leading the way. After the weigh in at Seven Seas Bait and Tackle, Bert's Bar cooked up some of the tastiest and freshest fish on the island. All in all it was a great day of fun and camaraderie.
This is a tournament where everyone wins some kind of prize, but the winning prize went to Julian Gunnoe for landing the largest Red fish.
Julian Gunnoe and his winning redfish!
The success of the event was made possible, in large part, by the generosity of the local community in helping sponsor the event. The Mariners want to give a heartfelt thank you and appreciation for the following businesses: Bert's Bar, Seven Seas Bait and Tackle, Reds Seafood Restaurant, Florida Paddle Sports, Olde Fish House Marina, Miceli's Italian Restaurant, Mulletville Restaurant, Bubbas Restaurant, Sea Tow, and Metro Scale. Please support these businesses because they support you and Pine Island.
On Sunday October 14, the Mariners will be giving a helping hand to their sister organization the Matlacha Hookers for their P.I.E. Fishing Tournament at the Olde Fish House Marina in Matlacha. This is a fun day for the whole family with not only a fishing contest for children and adults but live music all day, local art, raffles, prizes and an auction followed by a fish feast. The proceeds go to the Pine Island Elementary School.
The next event for the Mariners will be the Southwest Florida Blues Festival on Saturday November 23 at the Sun Splash Park in Cape Coral. One hundred percent of the proceeds go directly back to the Pine Island Community to support its charitable needs and scholarship's for college bound Pine Island residents.
The Blues Festival is a day and evening of listening and watching some of the best blues musicians touring the country. Come prepared for some head bobbing, foot tapping and involuntary dance steps if you like "the Blues". This year's headliner is the legendary Johnny Winter. It is an open air festival with great food, beverages, arts and crafts. Bring your lawn/beach chairs and picnic blankets for a casual relaxing and fun day of the finest blues music around.
