Fellow Islanders Sending Help presented with check from Bert’s Redfish Challenge

The Fifth Annual Bert's Redfish Challenge was held Sept. 7, at Bert's Bar and Grill in Matlacha.

Teams of up to four anglers per boat competed to land the two largest legal redfish. The fishing began at 7 a.m. with the weigh-in starting at noon and ending at 4 p.m. The winners were announced at 5 p.m.

Taking first was Team SP Designs/Tow Boat U.S. Charlotte Harbour with anglers Kyle Potts, Mitch Wiliamson and Chris Gunther. Their total weight was 18.52 pounce.

Second place went to Team Billy in the Bush with anglers Billy Glass, Jenn Glass, Sherry Dooley and Amanda Jones. Their total weight was 17.5 pounds.

Taking third was Team CSP. Its weight was 17 pounds.

Taking fourth was Team Blackwater Cartel with Craig McMicken and Lawrence Mottashed. The teams weight was 16.86 pounds.

The first place winners took home $1,200, second place $800, third place $500, and fourth place won a free entry for next year's tournament.

The event raised $2,315 for Pine Island F.I.S.H. Pine Island F.I.S.H. Fellow Islanders Sending Help is an organization that assists local residents in need with transportation, medical supplies, rent payments, utility bills, medical bills, etc. It also provides relief to non-paid primary caregivers for up to 4 hours per week, and contacts homebound individuals by phone and home visits. Pine Island F.I.S.H. is the lead agency in the Pine Island "Basket Brigade" Program.

F.I.S.H. is entirely free to those who need their assistance and is funded solely by donations.

Over the last four years, Bert's Redfish Challenge has raised over $25,000 to assist a local firefighter with cancer, assist area firefighters in need , and to help Pine Island F.I.S.H. with expenses.
