To the editor:
In the last update letter, I typed in the incorrect non-emergency telephone number. The correct number is 477-1000. I apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.
Also I would like to let those of you who have been concerned with the traffic issues on Avenue E at dismissal time from the elementary school know, that I did meet with the principal to discuss your numerous concerns. However, this is not going to be an easy or a quick fix.
May I make a small suggestion? To those of us who are not picking up children at the school, maybe we could find an alternate route by taking Philips out to Stringfellow to Pine Island Road. I know it may seem like an inconvenience, but it is only for a 15-minute period while school is letting out. We know the congestion is heavy and the cars can get lined up, but also during this time, if you are a parent picking up a child, please use your blinkers or flashers while sitting on the road awaiting your turn into the student pick-up area.
Last but least, a representative from the Sheriff's Office was also present with the principal and myself, and it is imperative that you do not try to attempt to pass the cars that are stopped in the roadway. Number one, you have no way of knowing if a car traveling in the opposite direction is having the same idea. An accident waiting to happen on that move. Number two, there is a solid yellow line present, and if there happens to be a deputy in the area and does see you cross over that solid line, you may be cited.
To date, I have been assured that there have been no accidents due to the traffic at dismissal time, let's try to keep it that way. As members of our Neighborhood Watch, we have an obligation to ourselves and to our neighbors to show consideration and safe driving skills.
As promised, I said I would try to rectify this problem. If I hear of any changes (if any), I will keep you up to date.
p.s. Thanks Cathy for the heads up on the typo!
