To the editor:
Last week, Tom Pollack asked why golf carts are not allowed on the bike path.
Pine Islanders voted in our town hall meetings to allow golf carts on the bike path, and that's the way I wrote the first draft of the ordinance. But then we found out that much of the bike path was built with federal funding that specifically prohibits golf carts. I then tried to arrange an exception for golf cart drivers with disabled permits, but succeeded only in getting an exception for motorized wheelchairs. That was the most either I or the county could do given the way the federal provisions are written.
By the way, the feds have given the county another grant to extend the bike path in St. James City down to Fourth Avenue. Same rules, of course.
