Woody’s Waterside to host Labor Day BBQ and Picnic

August 28, 2013
By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

On Monday, Sept. 2, Woody's Waterside at 3051 Stringfellow Road in St. James City will host the 6th Annual All-American Pine Island Labor Day BBQ and Picnic.

Woody's will be honoring the labor movement and its dedication to the social and economic achievements of American workers. The first Labor Day was held Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City by the Central Labor Union. In 1884 the first Monday of September was selected as the holiday and named the "workingmen's holiday." Finally on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday of September "Labor Day" and a national holiday.

Woody's will be celebrating Labor Day by featuring the Florida Swamp Music of Yard Dog Charlie, who recently returned from the Midwest tour of Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa and Tennessee. Yard Dog Charlie will be performing from 2-5 p.m. on Labor Day.

"I'm really looking forward to getting back to Florida," Yard Dog Charlie said from Milwaukee. "I did a birthday party up here a few nights ago and it was 55 degrees. I'm looking forward to the warmth of the Florida sunshine. Beginning on Sept. 9, I'll be at Woody's every Monday night from 6 to 9 p.m."

Charlie has been playing every Monday at Woody's for almost six years. Mardi Gras Mondays, as they are called, have grown into a weekly event attended by people from all over the world.

Charlie is well known locally as vocalist, accordionist and keyboardist for The Yard Dogs, one of the most popular area bands. His new CD, "Main Squeeze," is a crowd favorite and represents a cross section of his live show, mixing originals like "You Can't Drink Stupid Smart" and "Chick Chaser and Money Waster" with cover songs from "Midnight Special" to Fats Domino's "My Girl Josephine," all with a swampy Americana groove.
