Bokeelia resident Guy Glinski will be celebrating his 100th birthday at a party Friday, Aug. 30, at the?Pine Island Moose Lodge.
The open house will run from 3-7 p.m. and feature a fried fish dinner with cole slaw for $5 a plate. There will also be entertainment by the Salvation Army Harmonica Band and Guy.
For his 90th birthday, Glinski decided to jump out of an airplane. It was a day for the centenarian still remembers well.
"I always wanted to do it so I jumped 13,000 feet," he said. "I was tethered to an instructor but it was still very exciting. We were in free fall for about a minute and then the chute opened. I guess it took about five or six minutes to reach the ground."
The story was reported nationwide.
Glinski is a retired carpenter and widower of 13 years . He lives on Pine Island.
Glinski's daughter, Elizabeth Biersdorfer, 61, hugged him and wished him luck moments before the jump. She didn't seem surprised or bothered by her father's decision to pick up a new hobby.
"He's pretty sound of mind and he's in good shape," she said.
Glinski said he was inspired after reading a newspaper article about an 86-year-old woman who made a tandem skydive.
After a minute in free-fall and six minutes gliding under the open chute, Glinski could only muster a few words as he sat on the ground.
"Pretty cool, pretty cool," he said.
The Pine Island Moose Lodge is located at 8903 Stringfellow Road in St. James City.
