The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Tricia Mackenzie, owner of Mackenzie Design in North Fort Myers. Mackenzie recently purchased her second hair-dressing shop, Salon L.A. in St. James City. The former owner, Lena Lippmann, retired after owning the shop for 20 years.
Originally from Southwest Florida, Mackenzie has been "in the business" for 5 years.
"After renting a booth in other people's shops for years I decided to venture out on my own and purchased the shop in North Fort Myers in April," she said.

"I found this shop through a good friend of mine who happens to be Lena's brother-in-law," she said. "He told me Lena was retiring and helped us get together. I took over the business on June 18t and decided to keep the 'Salon L.A.' name because Lena built such a great business.
"Although I incorporated my own style by renovating the inside, I kept much of what Lena built into the business and the clients seem to like what I have done. And overall I've found the people of Pine Island very friendly - they welcomed me with open arms."
Newly hired Christine Karon has been a hairdresser for more than 20 years. She is available by appointment four days a week and every other Saturday.
"As a mother of two young children ages 6 and 3, it's scary opening up a business, much less two businesses in two months," Mackensie said. "Although it's a large sacrifice, now by owning two businesses my ultimate goal is to work hard now so later I can spend more time with my children."
Hours at the shop are hair: Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and every other Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and nails: two days a week, alternating Wednesday and Friday, then Tuesday and Thursday.
The salon is at 3394 Stringfellow Road, St. James City. For information, call 283-4222.
