From flamingoes to herons to egrets, everyone in Southwest Florida knows that we have some of the most beautiful birds in the world and Pine Island resident, and local author, Carol Wilson has written an ebook about the birds of the island.

It is a fantasy novel mostly about a great blue heron named Yolk, who magically understands English. It's written in an autobiographical style from the viewpoint of Yolk, who relates his life story through many humorous adventures to his human friend (the reader).

The book begins with Yolk and his brother White hatching from their eggs in northern Florida. When they leave their parents to live life on their own they settle on Pine Island "a paradise for a great blue heron."

From there they begin a series of funny adventures and meet a number of interesting characters like Crazy Eddie the turkey vulture; two pelicans, named Grouchy and Pouchy; Ollie the parrot; Izzy the osprey; and many others.

"All of the characters have characteristics of people I have met in my life and many of them are Pine Islanders. But the inspiration came from a blue heron that was in our back yard here on Pine Island. My husband is a bird photographer and has won prizes for his photography. It is those two things, and just spending time imagining ... somehow I wrote this book," Wilson said.

"I wanted to have a book that would appeal to the people on Pine Island so I included places on the island that people can relate to: Woody's, the fishing pier in Bokeelia, a restaurant my husband and I have always called the Lazy Pelican, but is actually the Lazy Flamingo," Wilson said.

"I also wanted to make it as inexpensive as possible. Since almost everyone has an eReader I decided to make it an e-book. It's easily downloadable from Amazon for just $2.99," Wilson said,

The reviews on are all overwhelmingly positive with four and five stars.

Different reviewers suggested "this book is good for all ages," "a book that will put a smile on your face, and keep it there" and "a delightful toast to Florida's bird life. The book includes over 40 high quality photos that help the reader, young and old, relate to the characters."

Wilson's book "One For The Birds" is available as an E-book from
