The Pine island-Matlacha Community Emergency Response Team will hold CPR training from July 23 through Aug. 20 for members and non-members.
Information Officer Paul Baumann said Debbie Iannucci, certified instructor, will conduct the classes every Tuesday. Those who attend will receive a certification.
The registration fee for CERT members is $10 and $25 for non-CERT members.
Non-CERT members are encouraged to call Iannucci at 239-283-7890 to set up an appointment for the class.
"When they call Debbie Iannucci, they will be assigned a time and date that is convenient to them," Baumann said.
The monies collected from registration will go towards their emergency fund for a call-up or to purchase equipment.
The Pine Island CERT unit is comprised of residents of Pine Island who are trained to respond to emergency situations, as well as assist in such conditions as hurricanes, plane crashes and fires.
"Training is conducted by professional firefighters, nurses and police officers, all under the supervision of Fire Chief David Bradley," Baumann said.
He said the members are trained in fire fighting, traffic control, search and rescue, first aid and triage.
"If you would like to help your fellow islanders and assist safety forces in times of emergency, you can join CERT by coming to Fire Station No. 1 at the center, and pick up an application," Baumann said. "You will be assigned to a team, issued a uniform, equipment bag, participant manual, ID card, a sticker for your car, and participate in training secessions. Your help will be much appreciated should an emergency occur."
The unit is activated by the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Department fire chief. Baumann said CERT members will act only on the chief's orders and those of team leaders on the scene.
Baumann said aCERT members are volunteers who meet and train regularly and receive no compensation.
