Ten youngsters participated in the two-week-long Junior Lifeguard Camp at the Pine Island Pool this year.

Pine Island Pool Aquatic Supervisor Sandy Reynolds said the kids who participated in the camp ranged from 9 to 14 years old. The youngsters met Monday through Friday for six hours at the pool.

"We did all kinds of CPR and first aid drills in the water and out," Reynolds said of the camp, as well as lifeguarding.

In addition, the kids were also treated to many field trips - to Sun Splash Family Waterpark, Lakes Park, Fort Myers Beach and kayaking in Matlacha.

"The Junior Lifeguard Camp at Pine Island Pool this summer was a huge success," Reynolds said.

The campers this year included Kyle and Connor Camacho, Hannah Crews, Blaise Marra, Hannah and Elijah Marzella, Blake and Sammi Sanders, Ashley McGraw and Auryana Player.

"I will tell you as the pool supervisor; this was the best camp I ever had," Reynolds said. "We have some good lifeguards coming up the ranks."

Reynolds started the Junior Lifeguard Camp more than a decade ago to help prepare teens to become lifeguards. When the program first began, Lee County had eight pools running during the summer, and they had a hard time filling all of the summer positions.

The Pine Island Pool still has one session of swimming lessons, July 15-25.

There is also Family Fun Night scheduled at the pool Friday, July 12 and Friday, July 26.

"The Bobby Holloway Junior group and the Kiwanis will be having free food from 6:30 p.m. until it runs out," Reynolds said. "Remember this is for the whole family, not just children."

She said the food is free and the admission is $2 for seniors and children and $3 for adults, unless an individual has a pool pass.

The extended hours of the pool will continue until Aug. 3. The pool will resume to five days a week on Aug. 6.
