Matlacha Bridge construction should be completed by end of the month

The remaining construction of the Matlacha Bridge is expected to be completed by the end of July, according to county officials.

Lee County Department of Transpor-tation Project Manager Sarah Clarke said the bridge roadway approaches need to be completed, as well as the installation of lights. The demolition of the old bascule pier and the completion of the bridge fender system, which is in the boating channel, also needs to be completed.

"We have asked that the above items be completed by the end of July," Clarke said.

With hurricane season under way, evacuation has become a concern for some residents.

"The new bridge is open to traffic and will handle hurricane evacuation," she said. "The contractor is required to have a hurricane plan in place."

That plan says that all equipment will be moved to ensure that two lanes are open to traffic during an evacuation. It also says that barges will be moved back to the mooring area behind Bert's to ensure the channel is not restricted.
