Pine Island Little League will be hosting Sanibel Babe Ruth League in the second annual Duel of the Islands All-stars tournament Saturday, June 15, at Phillips Park in Bokeelia.
he Pine Island Little League is a non-profit athletic organization that relies on registration fees, team sponsors, and donations from the community to pay for the day-to-day operation of the only organized sports organization for children on Pine Island. The league held its inaugural season in 1981 and many of the parents in the stands played on the ball field as children.
This year, Pine Island Little League had over 70 children on the roster, with eight teams spread between three divisions. The league has chosen a All-stars Minor and Majors team to compete in the tournament.
The two leagues will be competing for a traveling cup, which will be awarded to the league who wins the most games in the two-game tournament.
"Pine Island won last year and we're really hoping to come back for another win," said Wendy Mills, president of Pine Island Little League. "We would love to see everyone out there to cheer us on, especially our sponsors. Without the generous support from the community, none of this would be possible."
Three fund-raisers put on by Sandbar Productions LLC and donations from the community have raised enough money to have shade constructed over all four bleachers, which will hopefully be completed in time for the tournament.
"We've been working hard to put together a great tournament and are very proud of our two teams," said Mills. "These kids worked really hard to make it to All-stars."
Opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m., and the tournament will consist of two Minors games and two Majors games. After the tournament, both teams are invited to the Pine Island pool for some sun and fun camaraderie.
