Ileen Imel

Ileen Imel, 94, peacefully passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013, in Fort Myers following an extended illness. She was born to Marion and Florence DeVault in Lafayette, Ind., June 19, 1918. She attended school in Indianapolis and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority at Purdue University. She met Amelia Earhart while at Purdue. She was married in Pensacola, Fla., to the love of her life, Walter Imel, April 6, 1943. She taught home economics in the Indianapolis Junior High School system for 30 years. Upon retirement, they moved to Fort Myers. The two were founding members of Faith United Methodist Church. The Imels also enjoyed time camping and spending time with family and friends in Presque, Wis., and Branson, Mo. She started a craft store in Cape Coral and worked at Three Crafty Ladies on Sanibel Island for 34 years until the age of 90. She enjoyed shelling on the beach on Sanibel, oil painting, candle making and other crafts. She loved nature, especially birds. She was an amazing Christian woman, inspiring, so positive and generous in spirit and with her love. She was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt and friend and gave of herself tirelessly to her church serving on the Building Committee, organized communion and volunteering at the church’s Clothes Closet until she was 94. Her husband; parents; brothers, Glenn and Vere DeVault; brothers-in-law, Bud, Bob and Dean Imel; and a sister-in-law, Gladys, preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Edward (Marcia) Imel of Noblesville, Iind., sisters-in-law, Virginia Faye Imel of Marianna, Fla., Bernice Imel of Indianapolis, Marge DeVault of Madison, Wis.; 18 nieces and nephews; 15 great-nieces and nephews; and 5 great-great-nieces and nephews. Visitation was Monday, June 3, at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home in FortMyers. A funeral was held Tuesday, June 4, at Faith United Methodist Church, 15690 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers, followed by interment at Lee Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Faith United Methodist Church in memory of Ileen Imel. Thanks to the many friends, church family and those at HealthPark Care Center and Hospice who provided loving care and support throughout our mother’s illness.
