The Pine Island Garden Club is excited to welcome Ms. Sonja Smith Suitor as our guest speaker for our last meeting of the season on May 16. Suitor is a 24-year volunteer for the University of Florida/IAS Lee County Extension's Master Gardener program.
What can we learn from the centuries old practices of companion planting and gardening by the moon? These practices were developed at a time when gardeners and farmers did not have fertilizers to stimulate growth, or pesticides and fungicides to control pests and diseases. The seeds they used were from last year's crop and their weeds were controlled by hand. Lacking today's scientific practices and products, their best chance to feed their families was to work in harmony with nature. Can their methods be relevant and helpful to us today? Or are they mythical folklore? Attend our meeting and learn more!
Monthly Garden Club meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Fishers of Men Evangelical Lutheran Church at 10360 Stringfellow Road and begin at 9:00 a.m. with coffee and refreshments followed by our guest speaker's presentation and finishing up with a brief member's business meeting.
Club meetings are free and open to everyone. If you are interested in attending a meeting or becoming a member (annual dues are $20), please call Kathie Reiter, Membership Chairman, at 283-3176.
